Puppies are incredibly cute and oh, so cuddly. It seems as though almost everyone who sees a puppy wants to take it home with them and make it a member of their family. But, once you get the little pooch home, the cuteness tends to disappear when the first mess appears in the floor.

Puppy house training is probably the very first step you will want to take toward teaching your puppy the proper behavior that will make pet ownership a joy for you and your entire family. The following information outlines a method of puppy house training that makes the process a lot easier on both you and the puppy.

The house breaking method known as crate training works well with all breeds of pups. The process is really very simple. When you bring the puppy home, introduce him into a crate/cage that will be his bed. You should allow time for the puppy to become comfortable with his surroundings and realize that this will be his “safe zone”.

The main reason this method works is that the crate will indeed be viewed as the puppy’s bed. Dogs do not generally like to relieve themselves in the place where they are also going to sleep, so your puppy will be encouraged to learn how to control his bowel and bladder functions.

You should take the puppy outside and introduce him to the area where he will be expected to use the bathroom at regular intervals during the day. Provide a treat and lots of praise as rewards when the puppy relieves himself in the proper area so that you are also able to encourage repeat behavior.

Once your new pet becomes accustomed to this easy puppy house training routine, he will give you signs that he is asking to go outside, usually by going to the door and scratching.

As with all babies, there will be occasions when the puppy has an accident in the house. While many people tend to scold the puppy and rub his nose in the mess, this can be counter productive. In general, when a mess like this occurs, simply take the puppy to his yard and clean up the mess while the pup cannot see you.

It is important to clean with a chemical cleaner that will remove the odor as well because puppies will return to the same spot by scent and instinctively begin to use this spot as their bathroom area. Restricting the scents to the outdoor “doggy” area will help your pup make a quicker connection to the correct spot to “do his business”.

Puppy house training is a process that is ongoing for a number of weeks, and It will not be accomplished overnight. It is, however, a task that can be accomplished with a little patience and a lot of love. This will start you and your pup on the road to a happy and peaceful co-existence.
