Dog Training the Fast, Fun and Productive Way

If you want a well behaved dog you have to make discipline and dog training a normal part of your routine. When you teach your pet the proper behaviors they will know what is acceptable and what isn’t. There have to be rules in place if you want your dog to respect your leadership. A set of enforced rules will make your pet more comfortable because every pack has a leader and some type of guidelines concerning behavior.

Both young children and canines need some boundaries that set limits. Millions of pet owners quickly lose their biased view of the adorable little fur-ball they brought home as soon as the puppy begins to chew the sofa or have an accident on the floor or carpet. Puppies will invariably have their fair share of annoying behavior, disobedient moments and accidents but if you take the time to begin training your pet you will soon have a well behaved dog that will make you proud. You can use some of these dog training tips with your own pet today.

Setting the Boundaries

Dog training needs to begin by letting your pet understand the rules that are in effect in your home. The earlier that you put this plan into action the easier your job is going to be. If you let a 9 pound puppy jump on the sofa each night he will still be jumping on the sofa when he weighs 89 pounds. The house rules need to be enforced at all times if you do not want to confuse your dog.

Don’t let your pet sleep on the bed on weekends and expect him to stay on the floor the other 5 nights. Dogs need to keep off the furnishings in your home and everyone in the family must help enforce the rule. This will make training easier because the rules are going to always be the same.

Consistency Counts

You don’t get a break from dog training just because you have covered the rules with your pet. You have to be consistent and enforce them at all times. If your puppy does something that is not acceptable you have to let him know immediately. Letting one behavior slide just a few times will defeat all of the training up to that point.

You can use a whistle or a loud voice to call attention to what the dog is doing that is wrong. Then give him a demonstration of what the correct behavior should be. If he is chewing on a shoe instead of one of his toys take the shoe away and give him a toy. When you are very consistent and do not lose your temper while correcting a behavior you will see that your dog is quickly learning what he should and should not do.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a much more productive training method because you are not punishing the dog for bad behavior; you are giving him rewards when he is showing what a well behaved dog he really is. Letting your dog know that he is doing well and rewarding those good actions will encourage your pet to continue trying to please you.
The type of positive reinforcement that you use should be tailored to your pet. Some dogs want a food treat or toy, but others are happier just to get praise and hugs from their owner.

When you are first starting the training process you should remember that consistency is very important. Even if you start with food treats you can replace them with lots of praise later in the training program. The main thing is to make sure that your dog receives a reward each time he follows your instructions. The consistent, positive reinforcement will help your puppy understand the importance of listening and obeying commands.

While dog training is really not that difficult you will need patience when you are working with your pet. Gentle but firm commands and consistency will produce the quickest results. Even though this process will take some time and effort you will be very satisfied with the well behaved dog that you have trained.
