Dog House Training Tips You Can Use

You may believe that dog house training will not be necessary if you adopt or have an adult or senior dog. This is not always the case. Expect some accidents when your new companion arrives in your home. Once they get used to their new dwellings, accidents should decrease. There are a few reasons why adult and senior dogs might accidentally soil your home.

As dogs age, elimination may need to be done more frequently than in the past. People are no different. Holding it for prolonged periods may not be an option as they age. There is also the possibility that they become incontinent. Although this is an issue, it is not one that can be corrected by house training.

Your veterinarian will be able to examine your senior dog to see if the accidents have a medical cause. If not, you will have to manage the situation.

If you are a stay at home parent, more frequent outings may be necessary. Dog house training should be a joint effort if there are other members of you household. Consistency counts. In the event that you work outside the home, you may have to hire a pet sitter to come in and let your dog out.

There are also doggie diapers that look like baby diapers that you can use. These work best for the girls. The boys may need belly bands. Each of these is either fabric or plastic and has a replaceable absorbent pad. They can be found in some discount stores and in pet stores. Online shops also have them.

For small dogs you will have to make other accommodations. A sheltered area outside the home or under your deck may need to be provided for them in inclement weather. Also a bathroom area covered with mulch or gravel so your small dog won’t have to deal with wet or tall grass.

If your dog has had a successful program in the past, and suddenly has increased accidents, there can be underlying reasons such as medical issues. Your veterinarian can check for that possibility. Fears, separation anxiety, excitement urinating can also be causes and should be dealt with accordingly.

Although separation anxiety is a possibility it is usually accompanied by other behaviors. Increased accidents as well as barking and destruction of prohibited things will occur. This can be especially true if you have sudden long absences from the home when you take a new job or possibly become ill. Usually this will pass as the dog gets used to the situation. If not an animal behaviorist may have to be consulted.

Take your dogs instincts in consideration if you are adopting and house training a dog. Dogs are territorial. Male and female dogs will mark their turf. It can be a dog you have had for years and suddenly a new family member or pet emerges and they will mark their areas to let them know that those strange smells are only allowable with their own mark on them. Adopting an adult dog is a pleasant experience, because all of those puppy habits are over with and you can get down to basics.
