Most puppies will easily develop a habit of nipping and biting if they are not trained not to bite. It’s their nature to explore the world with their mouths and they have a natural instinct to bite and chew. When puppies play with one another that is how they play. Like many other puppy behaviors, if puppy training to eliminate biting is not done, it can develop into a real problem as the puppy grows into a full grown dog.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

Effecting puppy training to stop biting should be done early through consistent methods for best results. It is never appropriate to hit or physically punish a dog for poor behavior. Fortunately there are excellent methods for eliminating negative behavior that revolve around positive reinforcement. Puppies and dogs of all ages enjoy the positive attention of their owner and they love to eat. Using these two positive tools for puppy training to stop biting is very effective.

The best way to stop a negative behavior is to prevent the behavior from occurring at all. Biting can be minimized by avoiding rough play with your puppy. It is fun for both pet and owner and therefore we often do it before realizing the negative consequences. Playing rough with a puppy teaches them aggressive behavior. So does playing tug of war or chasing each other. Puppy training to prevent biting by avoiding this type of interaction will correct the problem. Instead engage in more structured play such as fetch. If a dog is allowed to be aggressive in play it can quickly lead to a serious problem once they are older.

Training a puppy not to bite can start early. When they nip at you as puppies don’t be afraid to say “ouch” loudly and stop playing with the puppy. Do not make eye contact with them. In this way you are letting them know that they hurt you and that you do not want to play with them when they do that. This is a very effective method to teach children when puppy training to stop biting.

Once the puppy has settled down and has stopped biting and nipping, sit down beside him quietly. Give him all the attention he wants. Remember to always reinforce good behavior and ignore bad behavior. Reward your puppy with attention and praise and puppy treats for special occasions.

Puppy training to prevent biting should be done promptly when the puppy bites down hard on the hand. One method you can use in this instance is to place one finger under your dog’s tongue and one under his jaw. Press the two fingers together to keep the puppy from moving away for a short period of time. The puppy cannot bite down when he is held this way and he doesn’t like the feeling. This is case when negative reinforcement may be useful.

If your family dog enjoys digging and you want to break him of the habit there are steps you can take. Using a few tricks trainers use to keep dogs from digging will help you begin to take the steps you need to take to stop the undesired behavior.

Proper training can help avoid small habits from becoming annoying ones if you take the time to train your dog when he is a puppy. Training a puppy requires consistency and proper use of rewards to be effective. Fortunately, most dogs love their owner’s attention and they love to eat.

Using these two things to your advantage will make any dog training task easier. Spending time with your dog teaching him appropriate behavior will make both of your lives much happier and relaxed.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

Why Dogs Dig

Understanding why your dog digs is the first step to learning how to keep dogs from digging. First and foremost, dogs just enjoy digging! If a dog is bored and doesn’t have enough interaction with people and playtime, they will be more likely to dig.

Another reason dogs dig as a means of escape. If they are penned in and want to get out, they will dig beneath a fence or gate in an effort to see what’s on the other side. An unaltered dog may dig to escape to find a mate.

Some breeds of dogs enjoy digging in the dirt more than others. It seems to be a part of their genetic makeup. A dog will dig in the dirt to find a cool place to lie down and take a nap in the warm weather. This is an instinctual process. Other dogs will dig a hole to bury their food or a bone to keep it safe.

How to Stop Dogs from Digging

The first step to take to keep dogs from digging is to give them plenty of exercise. Especially when they are young, dogs need lots of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Mental stimulation will also keep them from digging. Teach your dog tricks and give them an opportunity to experience something new. When dogs are bored they are often destructive.

If your pet is one that enjoys digging and burying a bone avoid giving him bones and give him treats that can be consumed right away. Another trick trainers use to keep dogs from digging is to bury balloons that are filled with air in the holes where the dog ordinarily digs. When the balloon pops it will frighten the dog and as a means of negative reinforcement will deter him from digging in that spot again.

To keep dogs from digging, supervise the dog whenever he is outside where he most frequently digs. Then if he starts to dig, distract him by playing with him or giving him a toy to play with. Use a hose or a squirt gun and surprise him with a short blast of water when he begins to dig. Be sure and praise your dog whenever he behaves as you would like him to behave. Avoid giving him negative attention when he misbehaves.

Stopping The Problem Before It Starts

Turn your back on the dog and give him no attention whatsoever. When the dog calms down you can them turn back to him, give him a treat and some praise to reinforce the positive behavior. Giving your dog a command, such as “sit” when he is engaging in negative behavior is also an excellent way to defuse the situation. When he follows your command praise him and offer him a treat. Be consistent in your training methods and you will have a well trained pet.

If you are reading this article, chances are you want to stop dog aggression in your family pet. Some breeds of dogs are more prone to aggression than others, but most can be trained to keep it under control. Dog aggression can be a sign of fear in a dog and is an attempt by them to defend their territory.

Dogs will sometimes be aggressive toward other dogs and some toward people. A dog may protect his owner by showing aggression when a stranger approaches. These are all natural dog behaviors but it is possible to train and socialize your pet to stop excessive aggressive behavior.

Socialize Your Puppy

One of the best ways for a pet owner to stop dog aggression is to begin the socialization process with the dog is a puppy. Exposing dogs early and often to other dogs and letting them spend time together and play together will help your dog see that other dogs are not a threat.

Make sure the adult dog they are with is a well mannered dog. Your puppy will then learn how to behave from the older dog.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

It is important, if at all possible, to stop dog aggression as soon as you see the first sign of it. If a dog is allowed to be aggressive on a continuous basis, it will be more difficult to break him of the habit. If the dog is at all dangerous be sure and use a muzzle or head collar until the pet can be trained and the behavior is eliminated. Do not use this as a solution, only as a temporary fix.

By working with your dog and training him to follow your command, you can stop aggression when it arises by giving your dog a command, such as “sit”. If he is busy following your command his attention will not be on the person or dog toward which he is being aggressive.

This also gives the dog a way to deal with his anxiety. As the trainer, be sure you also remain calm. Dogs are very good at picking up their owner’s vibes. Keep treats on hand to reward your dog every time he follows your command and modifies his behavior in a positive way.

Training methods like this one can be found in the online training program called Secrets to Dog Training. This program has been extremely successful in helping dog owners deal with difficult pet behaviors.

A brand new puppy, or a newly acquired dog, is a joy and a true delight for most pet loving families. There are going to be some occasions however when the puppy or dog exhibits behavior that disturbs your neighbors and simply drives you and other family members up the wall.

Whining is one such “doggie” behavior that can quickly eliminate a lot of the joy of a new pet for many folks. Fortunately there are a couple of different ways to stop dog whining before you lose your sanity completely.

Electronic Devices

Most pet stores, and even some of the major retail outlets, sell electronic devices that a pet owner can easily add to the puppy’s collar to help bring a stop to whining and other unwanted behaviors. The premise on which the product is based is that when the puppy whines, the device emits a piercing, disagreeable sound that is only audible to the animal.

Each time the puppy makes the whining sound he will trigger the electronic device to make its own sound. It will not take your new dog long to make the connection between his own whining and the high pitched frequency which is unpleasant to his ears. This will encourage canines of all ages to stop whining because it is the only way for them not to trigger the device. Soon your dog will be “whine-free” and no harsh discipline or loud words from you are ever needed.

Consistent, Persistent Training

Of course there are other people who simply prefer not to use electronic devices to train their pets. Some worry that these products will make their dogs overly fearful and others just want to refrain from what they perceive to be another negative training method.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

In order to stop dog whining without electronic devices, the owner must be prepared to follow two important steps. First, the owner must remain with the dog as much as possible so that they can hear every whining episode and curb the behavior quickly. The second step is that consistency must be part of each disciplinary move.

Hitting any dog is not an acceptable method of curbing their bad behaviors, but there are some other very effective means that you can use to control these unpleasant actions. Usually just clapping the hands together sharply will get the dog’s attention and interrupt an annoying behavior.

You can also hit a rolled up newspaper, or magazine, against the palm of your hand to make a loud noise. Try a loud, piercing whistle or shake some marbles in a tin can to get your dog’s attention when they are misbehaving. Dogs have hearing that is incredibly more sensitive than our own and these types of sounds can be used to deter them from whining.

The key to any dog training is to practice consistent methods of behavior modification each and every time. You must enforce the training any time the dog starts to whine if you want to maximize the results.

This usually will take a few repeated episodes before your pet begins to make the connection, but if you are correcting them every time they exhibit the undesirable behavior they will get the message you are sending. If you add some positive reinforcement for their good behavior when they do not whine it will help you get your message across even faster.

Whether a pet owner uses electronic devices or another form of training to stop dog whining, the end result will be a happier, well adjusted, and well disciplined canine. Animals that behave properly and pay attention to commands make wonderful additions to any family, and even your friends and neighbors will enjoy their company.

A dog is a great addition to any family, and they can be your child’s best friend. However there are some behaviors that pups and bigger dogs may display that will make you want to tear your hair in frustration.

At any given hour of the day you can bet you will find people online trying to search for answers that will help them stop dog from chewing on household furnishings, shoes and clothing. Perhaps you have even typed these words into the browser bar yourself.

There are some good tips that can be useful if you need to stop dog from chewing your house into pieces before your very eyes. You will need to remember that all dogs have an instinctive desire to chew, and this is even stronger in young puppies that are going through the teething process.

You can control this undesirable behavior but you have to be consistent and patient to get good results.

What to Do

Okay, let’s say that you really want to learn some good methods that will “stop dog from chewing” now and in the future. For starters you have to remember that you are in charge and make sure that your pet understands this too.

You need to understand that just like undisciplined children; dogs will try to get away with all types of behaviors unless you let them know that they must follow certain rules.

Remember that there can be many reasons for dogs to chew on different items in your home and yard. Perhaps they are bored, lonely, hungry or frustrated. It will help matters move along swiftly if you can figure out the exact reason for your dog’s chewing frenzy.

Make sure that you are giving them a lot of attention and daily exercise because this is often enough to relieve the problem in just a few week’s time. You should also get them some sturdy toys for them to chew on to their heart’s content.

Some hard rubber items that are shaped like balls or bones will be wonderful. It is a good idea not to get toys shaped like newspapers or shoes because it can really send a mixed message to your pet.

Make your home chewing resistant to your pet canine by keeping shoes and clothing out of their reach. You do not need to tempt your pet with these types of items because that is only inviting trouble. Once you have curbed their need to chew, you will not need to go to such lengths to protect your belongings.

There are some harmless sprays that you can use on the edges of furniture or on rugs and drapes that will create an unpleasant taste in a dog’s mouth, and these can be useful in repelling your dog’s attempts at chewing.

All of these tips can help you deal with problems that are encountered by many pet owners. If you really need to stop your dog from chewing up your home and possessions you should give these helpful hints a try. Remember that a well behaved pet is a joy to everyone and is a pleasure to welcome into any home.

Among the many annoying habits and behaviors of dogs are some that are actually dangerous if they are allowed to continue. One thing that you must do is to stop dog jumping up behavior in its tracks because even if this seems cute when a puppy does it the same behavior by an adult dog is far less appealing.

Many dogs may not even demonstrate this type of doggie problem until fully grown, so knowing how to put an end to uncontrolled jumping and bouncing is very important. Consider this for a moment, there are always some behaviors that a canine will exhibit that are not pleasing to people.

Barking, whining and digging in the yard are certainly undesirable actions, but they are not likely to cause any physical harm. However a dog jumping up on a visitor or a small child can potentially create a number of real problems and this is why it must be controlled as soon as it begins to happen.

What You Can Do

Every dog has some particular reason for jumping up on a person. Usually it is because the animal is happy and excited to see someone and this is how they demonstrate their feelings. Of course, a dog could just be trying to get some attention, or it could be trying to show dominance and aggression toward an outsider who has come to visit.

Unfortunately many pet owners consider this type of exuberance and physical action cute and they encourage it. This makes it very difficult to break when it finally gets out of hand, even to the owners.

We all want to enjoy and share the feelings from a happy, excited dog, but it is not pleasant to be pushed backward or have clothing ruined because of jumping up behavior.

If the dog jumps against tiny children or elderly visitors it could result in serious physical harm to these individuals, and the dog owner is going to be fully responsible.

Stop It Now

If you want to stop dog jumping up behavior there is no better time to start than right now. Begin training your dog as a puppy, or at least from the first day that you bring them into your home. You must never reward this type of behavior with any attention because this will only encourage your animal to continue to misbehave.

Some owners will laugh and talk with the dog when it jumps up on him one day and then scold the animal harshly the next day for getting mud on a good jacket with this same behavior.

This is not helpful to the dog because it only sends a mixed message and he cannot understand what he is supposed to do. So, of course he jumps on the owner at the next opportunity hoping to get the laughter and attention again.

The only way to stop this bad behavior is by consistently reprimanding and correcting the dog any time he jumps up without a proper command. Do not give them any attention when they are misbehaving and this will also emphasize that good behavior is the only way to get any type of reward.

If you are very consistent with these actions you will soon have your dog trained correctly and the behavior will be eliminated. Your pet will know the proper way to behave around family, friends and visitors.

How to Do It

Stopping dog jumping up behavior can be done quicker than you may realize. You should begin by turning your body away from your pet and refusing to give them any type of acknowledgment or eye contact.

Keep this up until your dog has calmed down and has all 4 paws on the floor, and then you can speak to them and acknowledge their presence. If they try to jump on you then you should ignore them once again.

You can also break this behavior by immediately giving them another command (such as “sit” or “stay”) in a loud, firm voice. This will help distract the dog and it will also serve to give them positive attention in the correct way.

Dogs are generally wonderful additions to any family. There are, however, some behaviors that dogs can begin to exhibit despite all your best training efforts. A bored dog may not want you to put stop to his jumping the fence behavior because they consider this a great way of relieving their frustration.

This might not be such a major problem for owners if the behaviors were self limiting, but it is very hard to stop dog jumping the fence behavior that a clever animal is using for his own amusement.

You need to know ways to stop dog jumping the fence behavior but you discover the reason that it began if you are going to have any hope of controlling it. Dogs will start jumping fences for several reasons. Some animals enjoy the freedom they find on the opposite side of the fence and want to repeat this thrilling experience.

There are some dogs that delight in winning a challenge, and clearing a fence certainly qualifies as a challenge. In both of these situations the dogs are now part of a self rewarding activity that brings them pleasure. You might have some success if you use positive reinforcement to modify your dog’s unwanted jumping behavior.

Try rewarding and praising your pet when he is not exhibiting this behavior and this be enough incentive for some to change their ways.

In some cases, searching for another possible trigger that is responsible for the dog jumping the fence behavior will offer a possible solution. Perhaps the dog is not neutered and it is his sex drive that compels him to clear the fence and find a mate. If this seems to be the problem your vet can neuter the animal for you and send him home the same day.

If your dog is able can see what is on the other side of the fence his desire to get to the other side may be caused by the people or animals that he is watching. You should consider building a new privacy fence that blocks these distractions and makes it impossible for your dog to see them.

Perhaps building a higher fence is an option that you could consider as a means of keeping your dog home where they belong. Another simple solution is to create an obstacle inside the fence that prevents the dog from getting over the top.

You can put shrubs near the fence that will deter your pet from getting too close to the fence. Bushes with sharp, thorny branches or cacti make an effective barrier that will confound most determined dogs.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

A last line of resort is to use electric collars and “invisible” fencing. This is very helpful when owners want to immediately stop dog jumping fence behavior in their formerly docile pet. The collar will transmit a mild, harmless shock any time a dog trips the sensors of the “invisible fence”.

This happens if the dog attempts to leave the yard or tries to wander into a yard area where he is not allowed and breaks the barrier line. The shock is instantaneous and directly connected to what the dog is doing. This helps your pet distinguish between good and bad actions.

Dog training is a crucial process that helps your family pet becomes a well behaved and well adjusted member of your family. There are some negative behaviors that dogs exhibit that must be stopped as early as possible. You should always be prepared to stop dog biting tendencies because this is one of the most dangerous and fear provoking behaviors a dog can demonstrate.

Many small dogs set the rules in their home because they have discovered that lots of people are threatened by their biting and snapping gestures. These pets frequently wield this power with a vengeance because many owners often encourage and reward this offensive behavior. No dog should ever be allowed to demonstrate this aggressive challenge in a home and go unpunished.

Puppies have a strong instinctive need to bite and chew and as long as this does not involve biting and chewing on people it is easy to correct. One of the easiest ways to curb this puppy behavior is to give them a chew toy or rawhide bone. If the puppy leaves this chewing object and begins to gnaw on furniture, papers or sofa cushions you need to stop him at once and discipline him on the spot.

It will not take your puppy long to figure out that all chewing must involve the toy that he was given. You can encourage his appreciation for a chew toy by making it part of the games that you play with your pet and praising him when you notice him using it to satisfy his chewing instinct.

An adult dog that bites is another problem altogether and to stop dog biting displays in these animals is a Herculean task. Often, there is an incident in the dog’s past that has played a contributory role. For instance, it may have been abused by a certain type of person dressed in a big hat. In this instance the dog may likely try to bite anyone wearing a big hat because this object of clothing might be what the dog associates with the abuse.

These animals can be retrained but it is a long, difficult process. Sometimes a dog that is trying to bite is acting out of fear or perhaps it has just never been properly socialized and taught which behaviors are acceptable. You may be able to use a muzzle to help your dog understand that biting, growling and snapping are not going to be tolerated, but they are fairly ineffective at correcting the behavior and only serve to prevent an actual biting attack from taking place.

Whether you are dealing with a puppy’s immature nature and instinctive tendency to bite and chew on all available objects, or a grown dog that bites, it is imperative that you stop dog biting before it is too late. A dog that will bite or nip is not controlled and they may turn and inflict serious injuries on you, your children or even a stranger that is walking down the street.

Proper training may help put an end to this serious behavior problem, but occasionally there may be an animal with aggressive instincts so strong that all stop dog biting methods are rendered useless. These dogs often have to be euthanized for safety reasons.

Taking the necessary steps to stop dog biting will prevent this behavioral problem from becoming an issue for you and your pet. The training should begin as soon as you bring your new dog home. Discourage your pet from chewing on your fingers or clothing. Do not play games that encourage your dog to sink his teeth into an object while you playfully shake and pull the object away from him.

This type of activity gives a tacit approval of aggressive actions to your young dog and it can be difficult to correct in the future. Proper training that includes appropriate rewards and punishments will teach your dog the correct behaviors and will lessen the likelihood that you will end up in court because your dog bit someone.
