A brand new puppy, or a newly acquired dog, is a joy and a true delight for most pet loving families. There are going to be some occasions however when the puppy or dog exhibits behavior that disturbs your neighbors and simply drives you and other family members up the wall.

Whining is one such “doggie” behavior that can quickly eliminate a lot of the joy of a new pet for many folks. Fortunately there are a couple of different ways to stop dog whining before you lose your sanity completely.

Electronic Devices

Most pet stores, and even some of the major retail outlets, sell electronic devices that a pet owner can easily add to the puppy’s collar to help bring a stop to whining and other unwanted behaviors. The premise on which the product is based is that when the puppy whines, the device emits a piercing, disagreeable sound that is only audible to the animal.

Each time the puppy makes the whining sound he will trigger the electronic device to make its own sound. It will not take your new dog long to make the connection between his own whining and the high pitched frequency which is unpleasant to his ears. This will encourage canines of all ages to stop whining because it is the only way for them not to trigger the device. Soon your dog will be “whine-free” and no harsh discipline or loud words from you are ever needed.

Consistent, Persistent Training

Of course there are other people who simply prefer not to use electronic devices to train their pets. Some worry that these products will make their dogs overly fearful and others just want to refrain from what they perceive to be another negative training method.

Click Here for the Secrets to Dog Training

In order to stop dog whining without electronic devices, the owner must be prepared to follow two important steps. First, the owner must remain with the dog as much as possible so that they can hear every whining episode and curb the behavior quickly. The second step is that consistency must be part of each disciplinary move.

Hitting any dog is not an acceptable method of curbing their bad behaviors, but there are some other very effective means that you can use to control these unpleasant actions. Usually just clapping the hands together sharply will get the dog’s attention and interrupt an annoying behavior.

You can also hit a rolled up newspaper, or magazine, against the palm of your hand to make a loud noise. Try a loud, piercing whistle or shake some marbles in a tin can to get your dog’s attention when they are misbehaving. Dogs have hearing that is incredibly more sensitive than our own and these types of sounds can be used to deter them from whining.

The key to any dog training is to practice consistent methods of behavior modification each and every time. You must enforce the training any time the dog starts to whine if you want to maximize the results.

This usually will take a few repeated episodes before your pet begins to make the connection, but if you are correcting them every time they exhibit the undesirable behavior they will get the message you are sending. If you add some positive reinforcement for their good behavior when they do not whine it will help you get your message across even faster.

Whether a pet owner uses electronic devices or another form of training to stop dog whining, the end result will be a happier, well adjusted, and well disciplined canine. Animals that behave properly and pay attention to commands make wonderful additions to any family, and even your friends and neighbors will enjoy their company.
